Doors are swinging or sliding barriers that can be opened or closed to allow or deny entry. Generally, doors are grouped with other building supplies.

Types

Doors are made of wood, plastic, metal, or composite materials and are available in many different styles and sizes. Typically, the material of construction is a function of whether the door is designed for indoor or outdoor use. Doors can also be configured with many different hardware and framing structures.

  • Interior Doors provide secure access to buildings and rooms and minimize energy waste. They are usually differentiated by their use in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Interior doors that are used to secure rooms in a house may be constructed of hollow core wood panels
  • A house’s exterior doors may be made of solid wood or steel. An exterior door must provide security and insulate the inside of a house or building from outside weather conditions.
  • Doors fitted with door hinges on one side are secured in a frame and swing open to allow entry. A swing door can be fitted with hardware to latch or lock it in the frame, or may be configured without latching or locking door hardware, enabling it to swing open freely. Swing doors without hardware are often used to separate rooms or spaces that don’t need additional security. An example of a swing door is one used in a restaurant to separate the kitchen from the dining area.
  • Decorative residential applications often use sliding or folding doors for egress on to patios and decks. A sliding door is fitted into a track in a frame and is typically constructed of large panes of glass.
  • Other types of doors include overhead doors for garages, warehouses and other large bays. A garage door may be manually operated or automatically operated with an electronic garage door opening system. Garage doors are constructed of individual linked sections or slats with rollers that move along a track to open and close. A rolling overhead door may also be used in a storage facility, shipping container, truck trailer, or warehouse.
