A well-timed and accurate observation resulting in an offer of coaching that is accepted, leads to the question of when and where the conversation is going to occur, and are you ready for it?

The principle of FAST coaching is that it works best when it is timely. This could mean that the invitation is offered whilst standing in a corridor, at the photocopier or in an airport lounge. Conventional coaching would suggest that coaching takes place in a quiet space without interruptions; that it mirrors the conditions found in a therapist s office, where an allocated amount of time is given to the discussion; that there are no distractions and the commitment is to meet regularly. Does this mean that coaching can only take place behind closed doors and has to be a regular commitment?

From the perspective of a manager who is trying to build coaching skills into their daily lives, the answer is No . It is possible to coach on the hoof , but the conditions have to be present that allow for attention to be given.

Training in interview skills includes advice on ensuring that the space where the interview is conducted is free of clutter, phone calls and other interruptions.
