Along with NeuralWare and Nestor, HNC is one of the pioneering neural network software companies to emerge in the mid-1980s. However, unlike the other two, HNC has been very successful and is now a public company. Its success, however, has not come from selling data mining software. In the 1990s the company changed its business strategy from selling tools to selling business solutions based on neural network technology, specifically in the area of credit card fraud detection. HNC?s flagship product, Falcon, currently monitors millions of credit card accounts, representing about 80 percent of cards issued in the United States, for fraud. Following in this vertical approach to providing solutions rather than software, HNC today sells ProfitMax, a credit card profitability management system. It has also recently spun off a company called Aptex, which is marketing products like SelectCast for Internet advertising and marketing using proprietary text recognition and neural network technologies.
