Appendix: Privacy Consortiums, Standards, and Legislation

Overview

With recent concerns over the gathering of personal information, privacy consortiums, software standards, and online legislation have evolved in an effort to regulate the Web. The following are a few of these privacy initiatives, which in the capturing and analysis of customer information you should be aware of.

TRUSTe

TRUSTe is a nonprofit web organization founded to promote online privacy. The TRUSTe ?trustmark? is an online branded symbol that signifies a website that has made a commitment not to disclose its private practices by posting a privacy statement that is backed by TRUSTe?s assurance process. All TRUSTe licensees display the trustmark either on their website with a link to the site?s privacy statement or directly on the privacy statement. At a minimum, each privacy statement discloses:


	?	What type of information your site gathers


	?	How the information will be used


	?	Who the information will be shared with (if anyone)

TRUSTe member sites agree to disclose information management practices in privacy statements, display the trustmark, adhere to stated privacy practices, and cooperate with all reviews. The TRUSTe trustmarks labeling system tells the website visitors that the site they are shopping in adheres to a three-tier policy:

No Exchange. A website bearing the TRUSTe No Exchange trustmark lets website visitors know that no personal information is being collected or tracked.
