Work in leisure organizations involves people working with other people. The service of food and drink, travel and recreational services almost always involves some work with others or is based on a team effort. It is important, therefore, that those wishing to understand the behaviour of people in leisure service organizations understand the influence that group membership has on the way people behave. In fact, organizations, (for example, individual units, hotels, theatres and sports team grounds), departments, work sections and, even, shift groups are all forms of groups that can both influence individual behaviour and individuals who make up the group.
Make a list of words that you might use to describe yourself to a stranger.
Would you describe yourself as a student, lecturer, manager or worker?
Think about one of the opposite group on the list and describe them in terms of their typical approach to work, values and attitudes, personality, characteristics and so on.
Describe the group to which you belong in similar terms.
Are there differences and similarities between the two lists? Why?
In both cases, are all members the same?
