Videoconferencing for the Real World: Implementing Effective Visual Communication Systems

Chapter 4: Choosing the Right System

Executive Summary

Selecting the right systems to meet your users needs is a key step in building a successful videoconferencing network. In this chapter, we will cover the four basic types of systems, the advantages and disadvantages of each for various applications, and how to select and configure the right system(s) for your needs. The four types are: desktop (PC) systems, set-top systems for use with TV monitors, integrated rollabout systems, and custom-built room systems. The most important consideration in selecting the optimum system is to choose one that suits the room, the number of users, and their special meeting needs in a costeffective manner. The second priority is to guard against rapid obsolescence by picking a system that can be easily expanded to meet your user and network requirements for at least the next two to three years.
