Intelligent Innovation: Four Steps to Achieving a Competitive Edge

CONVENTIONS

For simplicity's sake, the typical program phases are presented in Table 14-2 that correspond to various titles in various industries. For example, ISO 9000 suggests a "verification phase," roughly equivalent to our preliminary design "intake and compress" phases. DoD 5000 suggests a "program definition and risk reduction" phase, also roughly equivalent to our compress phase. Use whatever phase definitions make sense for your particular industry or project. The generic 3DRM phases are as shown in the table.

Table 14-2: Typical Phases of Program Management

Phase

Typical Conventions

  1. Concept exploration (intake)

Idea generation, conceptual drawings, renderings, pure research, simulations, calculations, etc.

  1. Preliminary design (intake/compress)

Prototyping, low initial run test, design review, test, simulations, evaluation, redesign

  1. Detailed design (compress)

Drawing review and approval, certification, final design, clinicals, one-off manufacture, assembly test, etc.

  1. Construction (combust/ thrust)

Final assembly, review and test, delivery, setup, etc.

Post-delivery (thrust) not addressed in this book but can be added to 3DRM

Sale, warranty, consumer feedback, market feedback, recycling, etc.
