Work content is the volume of work represented by a particular function/part/ activity in its unfinished form. An alternative definition is that work content is the actual amount of time a particular function or job will consume of a particular resource for a defined operation.
Work center capacity is the amount of product that can be produced by a given work center with a given efficiency, uptime, break time, and so forth. Planning, at all levels of detail, requires knowledge of a work center's capacity and schedule as well as the capacity and schedule (and cost of operation) of alternate work centers to make complete decisions. Process owners should be in agreement with the data and procedures used by these planners regarding each work center.
Work content includes the following:
Setup time (amortized if multiple parts)
Reasonable intra work center transport
Work content does not include the following:
Personal break time
Other legal/accounting/administrative overhead unless directly attributed to the activity
Transport between major operations
Machine downtime or utilization
Labor considerations
Work content is separate from work center capacity, which in turn is separate from sequencing. They must be used in conjunction (with cost information as well) to provide a meaningful data set to planners, forepersons, and make/buy decision makers.
