Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence for e-Commerce

Chapter 11: Solutions Architecture Case Study

Overview

In this chapter we bring together many of the topics we've discussed in previous chapters B2C and B2B e-commerce models, technology and product building blocks, security, and data quality and integrity into a single solutions architecture case study. The fictitious company that is the focus of our case study Acme Computer [1] is currently an "old economy" brick-and-mortar high-tech manufacturer of computers with no Internet presence, either customer-facing (B2C) or in its internal cross-enterprise operations (B2B).

As we've noted throughout this book, recommended best practices with regard to e-commerce data warehousing demand that an organization focus its initial efforts on developing a comprehensive strategy that takes both the transactional and business intelligence sides of e-commerce into consideration to prevent unhealthy barriers between business processes from developing.

Therefore, our case study in this chapter will take you from the up-front strategy work, including assessing the company's current situation with regard to e-commerce and accompanying business intelligence and creating a road map from their current state to the desired future state. A healthy dose of existing systems migration and integration architecture is also part of the scenario, since real-world development rarely occurs without needing to consider the integrate-or-migrate problem. (Except for brand-new dot-com companies, that is, and we saw how that played out during 2000.)

Finally, we map the strategy and conceptual architecture into implementation-specific architecture and technology selection as we bring other topics from this book into the scenario.
