PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND BACKGROUND

Clinical Support Staff Interactive Certification Program: Vital Signs is a training program designed to teach trainee medical assistants at Harvard Community Health Plan (HCHP), a Boston-based health maintenance organization, how to take vital signs temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and, for the OB/GYN assistants, urine analysis. Figure 16-1 shows the program's interface. The main image area is in the center frame, text to the right, and buttons on top of the page that take the student to each section of the program: thermometer = temperature; heart = pulse; lungs = respiration; manometer = blood pressure; and dip stick = urine analysis.

Vital Signs presents a classic example of straightforward, effective, computer-based training. One of the ways it differs from the two previous case studies is that its goal is to teach a specific skill to a clearly defined audience. Properly learning this skill has life-and-death importance.
