Phase Conjugate Laser Optics

Chapter 5.3 - A 25-J, 15-NS Amplifier Using A Liquid SBS Cell

5.3.1   Design considerations for the 15-ns system

The initial motivation for the design of this laser system was for the production of
1-nm soft X rays for proximity-print photolithography [1]. The requirements
were peak powers of >1 GW in a 10- to 20-ns pulse, good focusability, and a pulse
repetition frequency of >5 Hz to provide acceptable processing throughput.
Continuing development in this pulse duration regime, however, has more recently
been driven by laser peening applications [3] which require 15- to 30-ns pulses. For
effective laser peening, at least 20 J/pulse is required in order to minimize cold work
and to minimize diffractive dissipation of the shock wave in the bulk of the metal
part being treated.
