Phase Conjugate Laser Optics

Chapter 5.3.2 - Optical architecture of the 15-ns system

5.3.2   Optical architecture of the 15-ns system

When the 25-J, 15-ns laser system was first designed, the intent was to minimize the
thermally induced optical distortions introduced by the flashlamp-pumped amplifier
and to then operate the amplifier beam train without wavefront correction.
Provisions were made for the incorporation of a phase conjugate mirror in the event
that a smaller focal spot were required for efficient X ray generation. However,
during initial activation of the laser, it quickly became apparent that SBS phase
conjugation provided significant increases in performance, apart from output
divergence requirements. These included increased extraction efficiency, reduced
optical component damage, increased interstage gain hold-off, and greatly improved
alignment stability.
