How to Cheat at Managing Windows Server Update Services

Chapter 4: Upgrading from SUS to WSUS

Introduction

A Software Update Services server (SUS)cannot be upgraded to a Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server; however, you can migrateupdates and approvals from a SUS server to a WSUS server. Doing so prevents you from having todownload and approve all of your updates again. This is done in one of two ways. You can installWSUS onto the server already running SUS and perform a local migration known as an in-place upgrade, or you can install WSUS onto another serverand migrate everything across the network, which is known as an across-the-wire upgrade.

In-Place Upgrade

An in-place-upgrade is the easiest way to migrate from SUS to WSUS. It involves installingWSUS onto the existing SUS server. Both will run successfully at the same time, which allows you tobecome familiar with WSUS before switching over all of your clients. Once WSUS is working asexpected, you can switch over all of your clients and decommission SUS. The in-place upgrade is aone-way process; you can migrate from SUS to WSUS, but not from WSUS back to SUS.

Even though SUS and WSUS will run on the same machine at the same time, they will neversynchronize with each other. This means that if you want to run both of them at the same time foran extended period of time, you must administer them separately.

Note

Microsoft is ending support for SUS updates on June 6, 2006. To continue updating yourclients, you will have to move to WSUS at that time.
