How to Cheat at Managing Windows Server Update Services

There are many different ways to configure AU clients for WSUS updates. If you were anadministrator of the predecessor to WSUS called Software Update Services (SUS) or the more popularonline WindowsUpdate.com site, you know that both of theseupdate mechanisms only allow you to update Windows-specific software updates. What is unique andpossibly the biggest change in the release of Microsoft s WSUS, is its ability to update not onlythe Windows OS, but also specific Microsoft product line suites. The following sections brieflydiscuss and show how to update your Windows clients, and also touches on some specifics that dealwith updating products such as Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SQL Server.
Once your policies are in place and you have chosen your client configuration method, thenext step is to begin updating your clients. Updating WSUS clients requires a few steps. First youmust choose the updates that target your current environment (e.g., what type of updates and forwhat products). This is accomplished by choosing the Products andClassifications configuration page in your WSUS Admin console under Options ( Synchronization Options. There you willfind the following two categories:
