To believe that WSUS will always deployperfectly, operate flawlessly, and work forever is overly optimistic. For the most part, WindowsServer Update Services (WSUS) is reliable; however, this chapter discusses several areas whereproblems and issues can arise and suggests different ways to resolve those problems.
There are a few issues that you must address to ensure a trouble-free WSUS installation:
Make sure that the server is enabled and running when you launch WSUS setup. If you choose touse Windows Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) as the supporting database, and theserver is not running on the computer where you intend to install WSUS, the WSUS installationfails. To install WMSDE, the server must be running.
Make sure you have met all of the installation requirements for the computer on which you areinstalling WSUS. It should have a relatively beefy central processing unit (CPU), a fast networkconnection with plenty of available memory, and so on.
Make sure you are running the latest, updated versions of Windows 2000 Server or WindowsServer 2003, and that you have enough free disk space on the partition or drive on which you wouldlike to install WSUS.
If you are upgrading to a newer release of WSUS, take precautions against an upgrade failureduring the actual setup process by backing up your existing configuration before starting.
