Spacecraft Thermal Control Handbook, Volume II-Cryogenics

Part 7: Material Properties

Chapter List

Chapter 22: Thermophysical Properties of Selected Materials
Chapter 23: Emittance of Selected Materials at Cryogenic Temperatures
M. DonabedianThe Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, California.

Numerous textbooks, handbooks, and electronic resources are available in the open literature of cryogenics (and in many private corporate databases as well) that provide the necessary thermophysical properties of various materials as required for any specific design or analysis problem. To supplement those references, this chapter is intended to serve as a handy quick-reference source of tables and graphs of a very select set of properties for specific metals, alloys, composites, plastics, coatings, isolators, fluids, gases, and refrigerants that thermal engineers frequently use.

Key Sources of Cryogenic Properties

Many of the valuable sources of information about cryogenic properties listed in this section are, at the time of this writing, out of print but obtainable on loan from university and corporate libraries. Some are in the process of being converted into electronic database format and will be accessible via CD-ROM. Several existing available database programs are also cited here.

  • The text Cryogenic Engineering by Russell B. Scott [22.1] is an out-of-print classic that includes many charts and tables pertaining to cryogenic fluids and has extensive data on low-temperature properties of structural materials.

  • National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Circular # 556, "Thermal Conductivity of Metals and Alloys at Low Temperature" by Powell and Blanpied, [22.2] is also out of print, but includes a wealth of information from many sources throughout the world.
