Overview
Domains are the entities from which a Windows NT technical infrastructure is built to meet the security and technology management needs of an organization. Specifically, users should be able to access the applications and data they need from wherever they are working and the whole infrastructure should be manageable from wherever the expertise resides. To create such an infrastructure mandates a complete understanding of the needs of users and IT Support.
Windows NT is designed around a client-server architecture, rendering the network transparent to administrative tools and system components. Thus, the same tool can be used to manage resources on a local computer as on a remote computer. The flexibility is immense. However, to exploit it in a business critical distributed environment requires two key services to be in place:
? Security
? Management
Security is needed so there can be sensible restrictions and permissions associated with intra- and inter-computer resource access. Efficient management of the distributed systems from a chosen point in the network is essential if the operational overheads are not to outweigh the benefits of distributed computing.
