5.6 Vertical applications
Most of the application mentioned so far are considered horizontal in that they are equally useful for all industry segments. E-mail, for example, is used by financial, manufacturing, and healthcare professionals in the same way. But beyond these cross-industry applications there are also many specific needs that relate only to a very targeted audience. Some of these are listed in Table 5.5.
| Fleet messaging | Package delivery and pickup. Packages can be scanned at each point en route so the system can inform customers where packages are at any time. Delivery may be confirmed with a signature captured on a screen with pen input. System-wide status can be updated within seconds or minutes. |
| Field service support | Rapid dispatch of repair personnel in response to customer-critical needs. It can facilitate efficient scheduling and rescheduling of on-site visits and immediate access to parts availability, prices, and help from other personnel. |
| Dispatch | Efficient scheduling and routing. Taxi companies and limousine services can use wireless dispatch applications. Messages can be displayed on dash-mounted units and delivered even when the driver is out of the car. |
| Healthcare | Real-time access to patient information from any location, inputting of patient details, patient histories, and prescription information and medical supply inventories. |
| Insurance | Filing and verification of insurance claims. |
| Manufacturing | Materials can be tracked and manufacturing processes controlled more efficiently. |
| Retail | Increased efficiency of order taking and tracking, inventory management, and faster customer service |
