The Wireless Internet Explained

Chapter 8: Future Directions

Overview

In this chapter, we will look at some of the current developments in wireless technology. At this point it is not possible to know where they will lead, but it is clear that some of them will eventually make it into mainstream technology.

We will begin with the transformation of mobile architectures based on IP-based networking. By providing a common denominator for all wireless technologies (and, in fact, one that is also common to wired technologies) the architecture becomes more open and enables rapid development of independent modules.

We will also look at the possibilities for improving air interfaces to maximize throughput and versatility, as well as the evolution of current wireless networks to improve service and mobility.

New applications will need to be written with mobile and wireless environments in mind. We will examine some of the implications for software developers and the evolution of tools to support them. At the same time, the higher bandwidth and quality of service will enable a new set of applications, such as streaming media.

8.1 Mobile architectures

8.1.1 IP-Based networks

One trend that some mobile networks have already begun is the migration to IP-based networks. Wireless LANs almost all use IP, and WANs, such as GPRS, are beginning to follow suit.

Note that the common denominator is IP as the routing protocol. There will be transport protocols other than TCP. In mobile environments UDP is often more appropriate. Telecom companies are also pursuing Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) as a transport...
