The Wireless Internet Explained

Implementing a mobile solution is similar to deploying any other kind of application. At some stage, after looking at your requirements and deciding whether there is a business need to proceed, you need to architect your solution. This design is the main topic of this chapter.
The architecture involves looking at the building blocks that are available, either through in-house development or for purchase on the market. Once we decide on what components we need to build our solution, the next step is to organize them into a clear and efficient topology. These are the issues we will be looking at.
Obviously, you need to follow a structured approach during the whole project life cycle, including thorough documentation and testing. My omission of some of these tasks should not minimize their importance but rather imply that they are not particular to wireless. This is a book about technology and not project management.
Figure 7.1 illustrates the four main components that we need to incorporate in our design, as follows:
Devices
Networks
Gateways, if required
Applications
We've already covered most of the topics relating to devices, networks, and applications. But we've only briefly touched on gateways so far. Since they fill a critical gap in any wireless implementation, we will deal with them in more detail in this chapter.
One of the first steps in any implementation is to look at what products and services are available on the market. Most...
