Process architecture is the link between the Organization strategy and the Launch pad phases (Figure 14.1). Just like the Organization strategy phase, the Process architecture phase is a prerequisite for any organization wishing to undertake successful process management-related activities, which are sustainable and agile, to continuously meet the objectives of the organization in changing circumstances. The Process architecture phase is the foundation for an organization s process-related projects. We will show in this chapter that good process architecture should be an essential part of a larger organization-driven enterprise architecture.
Process architecture is an important step in a BPM project and BPM organization. It is too often neglected or just paid lip service. A process architecture ensures that:
processes to be redesigned, or newly developed, are meeting the organization s objectives and fit within the organization strategy.
processes are aligned with the way the business is (or should be) performed, and are able to provide the products/services to customers.
processes are aligned with the IT architecture and applications, as the IT has to support the current and future processes.
processes are aligned with related processes. Large organizations quite often have several process management initiatives running concurrently, and it is crucial that all these BPM projects are in tune with each other.
all relevant information and decisions on processes are grouped together. If information is scattered throughout the organization, this can result in duplication, confusion and inconsistencies.
