A Society for the general advancement of Mechanical Science and more particularly for promoting the acquisition of that species of knowledge which constitutes the profession of a Civil Engineer, being the art of directing the Great Sources of Power in Nature for the use and convenience of man.

The virtue of integrity is not simply an individual one but applies to the professional institution and management groups as well: The profession as a whole has to be consistent and be able to relate values to practice. Without this the recognition of the profession as a body of experts concerned for public welfare will be eroded and with that will go the trust essential to the functioning of any professional relationship.

The existence of an institution of professionals is essential for the development and maintenance of professional virtues. It enables the individual professional to reflect upon his or her own integrity and to learn from the experience of others, transmitting the culture from generation to generation. It provides an external perspective that enables proper reflection and responsibility.

The institution can:

  • Enable the professional development of moral awareness, skills, responsibility and identity, through codes, dialogues and training.

  • Ensure its processes and organization are conducive to the development of moral responsibility.

  • Provide support and the opportunity for professionals to work through decisionmaking and any conflicts of interest.

  • Regulate the practice of the individual professional.

  • Play a major role in communicating
