Essential Linux

This appendix gives a brief description of what is included on the companion CD-ROM. The basic software is based on Slackware release 3.1 and includes the normal utilities and software needed to create a Linux system. In addition, the kernel sources for all the 1.3 and 2.0 releases have been added. The software is covered by the GNU copyleft license please read it.
This is complete except for one omission. The live directory and its contents have been removed to create enough free disk space to allow the kernel source for all version 1.3.x and 2.0 releases to be included. This means that the option to run Linux from the CD-ROM is not available from this disk.
This contains all the additional documentation that is available from the Sunsite host at the time of writing and covers the more advanced features of Linux. The information is provided in several formats such as PostScript and plain ASCII. This folder includes the HOW-TO and the Linux Documentation Project documents which are the basis of the Linux Bible and cover nearly every aspect of Linux. They can provide a lot more information that is beyond the scope of this book. One word of caution: they can be a little out of date and sometimes the software doesn't quite function in the way it is described. Some of the documents are very preliminary and therefore should be considered as unstable. As one document puts it: "alpha version...
