wc

wc -lwc files

This command counts the total number of lines, words and characters in either a single or multiple files. The -lwc option is the default and counts all lines, words and characters. To count only words, add -w and so on.

$ wc test212 123 792 test2$ wc *4 21 91 64 17 70 data4 21 90 ed.hup3 14 81 script12 123 792 test227 186 1124 total$ wc -w t*123 test21 testfile1 testfile2125 total$

cal

cal date

cal is a calendar that displays for any particular month or day. The example below is not a misprint the lost days happened when the United Kingdom switched calendars. There were many riots at the time with people complaining about the eleven days that the government had taken from them!

$ cal 9 1752September 1752S M Tu W Th F S1 2 14 15 1617 18 19 20 21 22 2324 25 26 27 28 29 30$
