5.7 Registries

These are not standards bodies, as such, but they are more 'official' than the industry forums described in section 5.8, because they help to administer operational requirements imposed by the use of the standards. The need for standard formats for elements such as Internet protocol parameters and addresses led to the recognition that registries were needed to ensure that every new element is in the correct format, and unique from those that have already been used. Registries maintain these lists of unique elements, and control the assignment of new ones.

5.7.1 IANA

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) [15] is the central co-ordinator for the assignment of unique parameter values for Internet protocols. IANA is chartered by ISOC to act as the clearing house to assign and co-ordinate the use of numerous Internet protocol parameters.

5.7.2 ICANN

Within the last two years, some of the functions of IANA have been taken over by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) [16]. It is the non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions previously performed under US Government contract by IANA and other entities.

The intention is to make ICANN a truly international body, to reflect the status of the Internet as an international resource, no longer to be controlled by the USA. For this reason, there are strict guidelines that dictate that the directors must be recruited...
