- Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation
- Compression scheme used for digital audio. It is a "lossy" scheme which tends to degrade the signal to some extent. Typically, ADPCM reduces the number of bits per sample from 8 to 4.

- A-law
- Type of companding scheme used in the telephone network outside of North America.
- analog
- Represents signals by using a continuously variable physical quantity, such as the amount of current flowing.
- ANI

- API
- See Applications Programming Interface.
- Applications Programming Interface
- A set of functions provided to a programming language for performing a logically related set of tasks.
- ASR
- See Automatic Speech Recognition.
- associative arrays
- A feature of a programming language where a data type other than an integer (typically a string) is used as an array subscript.
- associativity
- Property of an operator in a programming language which specifies whether it groups from left-to-right or right-to-left. E.g., addition is usually right-associative, meaning that a+b+c is interpreted as (a+b)+c, assignment is usually left-associative so that a=b=c is interpreted as a=(b=c).
- audiotext
- A type of voice application which offers pre-recorded information accessed via a fixed menu tree.
- Augmented Backus-Naur Form
- A particular variant of Backus-Naur Form.
- auto-dialer
- A device which dials out-bound calls (usually attempting many calls in parallel), when a call is completed it is patched through to a live operator. Used for tele-sales, polling etc.
