BIM and Construction Management: Proven Tools, Methods, and Workflows

BIM can be a powerful tool during construction administration. Used in conjunction with a digital request for information (RFI) and submittal process, using BIM in the construction administration phase of a project provides the project superintendent and supporting staff with many tools that were not available before.
As the BIM industry continues to develop architectural and engineering modeling tools, BIM will continue to provide the contractor with more ways of finding and coordinating that information. Yet, as the industry continues to develop tools for the architectural and engineering teams, it is also critical that software companies learn how contractors are using building information modeling and what they would like to see more of. This chapter provides some insight about how building information modeling can currently be utilized and offers some suggestions about the areas in which software still needs to develop and begin bridging the gaps of a BIM process and project. Additionally, it should be stated that BIM in fact does "work" in the field and that it's often a misconception that although it's not completely intuitive and integrated that it doesn't function at all. There is plenty of room for improvement and smoother interoperability between field systems and tools; however, there is a great opportunity missed by contractors who choose not to utilize this technology and leverage it to some or its full extent on the construction site.
