Civil Engineering: Problems and Solutions, 15th Edition

Chapter 1: Introduction

Donald G. Newnan

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

This book can be used as a stand-alone exam review tool or in combination with Civil Engineering: License Review.

As a stand-alone review, Civil Engineering: Problems & Solutions provides extensive opportunity to practice solving problems that mirror the scope and difficulty of the Principles and Practice of Civil Engineering Exam. Each chapter includes problems and solutions specific to a topic or subtopic of the exam. You can move through the chapters in the order you choose and allocate your time to individual topics as you see fit. At the end of the book, a sample exam gives you a chance to simulate the exam experience by answering a representative cross-section of problems within the time constraints of the actual exam.

The companion book, Civil Engineering: License Review, contains a review of civil engineering topics covered on the exam. If you wish to study equations, analytical methods, design methods, and solved examples before tackling some practice problems, start with this companion book before looking to Civil Engineering: Problems & Solutions. The same chapter problems and sample exam questions are provided in both books, but only Civil Engineering: Problems & Solutions includes the solutions.

BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER

There are four distinct steps to achieving registration as a Professional Engineer: (1) education, (2) Fundamentals of Engineering/Engineer-in-Training (FE/EIT) exam, (3) professional experience, and (4) the professional engineer (PE) exam, more formally known as the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam.
