Clean Energy

Glossary of Terms

A

Active material
The material in the electrodes of batteries that takes part in the electrochemical reactions to store and deliver the electrical energy.
Adiabatic process
A process that takes place without heat entering or leaving the system.
Alternating current
Electric current that flows for an interval of time (half-period) in one direction and then for the same time in the opposite direction. The normal waveform is sinusoidal.
Angular velocity
Quantitative expression of the amount of rotation that a spinning object undergoes per unit time.
Anion
Ion in an electrolyte that carries a negative charge and that migrates towards the anode under the influence of a potential gradient.

See also Anode.

See also Ion.

Anode
An electrode at which an oxidation process, i.e. loss of electrons, is occurring. During electrolysis, the anode is the positive electrode. In a rechargeable battery, the anode is the positive electrode on charge and the negative electrode on discharge.
Aquifer
Underground water-bearing, porous rock strata that yields economic supplies of water, sometimes heated, to wells or springs.
Automotive battery
A battery designed to provide electrical power for an internal-combustion-engined vehicle.

B

Band-gap energy
The energy gap, generally measured in electron-volts (eV), between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band in a Crystalline solid.

See also Conduction band.

See also Energy band.

See also Valence band.

Barrel
A measure of crude oil (petroleum), approximately 159 L.
Battery
A multiple of electrochemical cells of the same chemistry housed in a...
