Sortation Concepts

There are different concepts for sorting batched COs. CO sortation location design parameters are:

  • Determine the peak, most frequent, and average CO SKU or piece number and cube.

  • Determine the sortation location percent utilization and associated SKU number and cube. Fifty percent sortation location utilization is a reasonable factor with 50 pieces per sortation location.

  • Design each sortation/pack location with an end stop, a pack station surface for easy SKU flow onto a pack table, and sufficient space to perform final CO sort activity and pack activity.

  • Determine whether the sortation activity is manual or mechanized and ensure that the pick and sort instruction satisfies the pick area and sortation area requirements.

Manual Sortation Concepts

Manual sortation concepts (see Figure 4.5) are:

  • In a pick area with a paper document, RF device, or light pick/sort instruction, a picker picks and sorts customer-ordered SKUs to a cart shelf or into a separated tote.

  • In a pick area with a paper document, RF device, or light pick/sort instruction, a picker picks and sorts CO SKUs to a mixed tote or bin location.

  • In a sort area with a discreet label pick/sort instruction from a tote, basket, or a cart, an employee sorts CO picked and labeled SKUs to a pigeonhole location.

  • In a sort area with a discreet label pick/sort instruction from a tote, basket, or a cart, an employee sorts CO picked and labeled SKUs to a slide or chute location.
