A-H

Active zone
That portion of soil behind the shoring wall which is deemed to be subject to possible movement.
Anchor
An embedded tension element which provides lateral support to a shoring wall through frictional attachment to soil or rock. The term includes all portions of the installation including the grout and anchorage.
Anchor head
The device which attaches a strand anchor to the retaining wall.
Anchor plate
A plate which the anchor head or nut is seated on.
Anchorage
Name of the total assembly at the face of the shoring wall which includes, in the case of strand anchors, the anchor head, plate, wedges and corrosion protection cap (if used). For bar anchors it includes the plate, nut and corrosion protection cap (if used).
Bar
Type of anchor tendon utilizing the rod form of steel.
Boulders
Discrete elements of rock which are larger in their largest dimension than 12 inches (305 mm).

Clay
A sedimentary material with grains less than 0.002 millimeters in diameter.
Cobbles
discrete elements of rock which are smaller than boulders and larger than gravel.
Concrete A manufactured mixture of water, Portland cement, sand, and gravel. May include fly ash and additives.
Controlled density fill
a manufactured mixture of sand, water, Portland cement and fly ash which is used as a backfill substance for trenches and soldier piles.
