Engineering Design Communication and Modeling Using Unigraphics NX

Engineering design is a problem-solving process aimed at inventing new or improving existing machines or machine units. It faces the challenge of applying engineering science in terms of kinematics, strength, durability, aesthetics/cosmetics, assembly, manufacture, and quality control. The final products of engineering design mustbe marketable in terms of cost, potential users, and profitability. By its very nature, problem solving in engineering design is not a single solutionprocess. The solutions to a design problem are strongly influenced by the abilities of engineers applying knowledge to everyday design problems and bytheir experiences.
Nevertheless, this chapter provides a roadmap for engineering design problems, and two example designs. From the roadmap and these examples, students can learn how to put together resources, constraints, factors, and concerns in the entire process of engineering design. Therefore, they will gain problem-solving abilities in a more organized and systematical manner.
In this chapter, we will use some phrases in design modeling that will be covered in the following chapters.
Upon the completion of this chapter, you will be able to
Understand the concept of computer-aided engineering
Learn problem-solving processes in engineering design
Identify general approaches to an engineering design project
Organize and start a design project
When solving problems in engineering design you will face two challenges: engineering sciences and product marketability. Traditionally, design engineers have been oriented more toward problem solving to confront engineering challenges because of the limitations of tools and resources such as computer-aided...
