10.6 MECHANICAL COMPONENT DESIGNS

Using the methods discussed in the previous sections, we now can model some commonly used classical mechanical components.

10.6.1 JOUKOWSKI AIRFOIL

A Joukowski airfoil is a theoretical one. It is obtained by a conformal map-ping of a complex function

where u and v are the real and imaginary parts of w, respectively. z = x + iy or z = r ( r is a constant) in polar form, and i is the unit of complex number. In other words, Joukowski mapping is a conformal mapping that maps a unit circle in the z-plane into a theoretical airfoil in the w-plane (Figure 10-59).

Note

The scales in u-v pla e are not the same, so the difference between them is highlighted.

According to Equation (10-6), we generate the data that describes the pro-file of a Joukowski airfoil (Table 10-4). We will create the airfoil model based on these data. You need to retype them into a data file or, alterna-tively, you can use Equation (10-6) to generate your own data file directly.

Activity 10-12: create a Joukowski airfoil
  1. Use the data in the second, third, and fourth columns of Table 10-4 (with no headers) and retype them into a data file using either Notepad or Excel. Save the file as "joukowski.dat" in your working directory. Make sure the data file is 26 x 3, such that the x, y, and z coordinates are...
