Introducing and Implementing Autodesk Revit Building

Chapter 8: Beyond the Design Area and Room Plans

INTRODUCTION

Revit Building's intelligent building modeler provides tools that fill a couple of basic needs of the people who pay designers to do their work. Design clients, usually the owners of the building being designed, almost always need to know the relative areas reserved for different spaces and functions within the design. Sometimes this information will be used for taxation purposes, most often for rental or other occupancy classifications. Throughout the lifespan of a commercial building in particular, accurate occupancy information can be critical. Revit Building models can supply this information as anticipated uses or building configurations change during and after construction in ways that static 2D drawings or previous 3D models never could. This may have long-range implications for design firms as suppliers of "life-cycle' management (or facilities management) services for buildings long after architectural functions are complete.

One of the easiest ways to collect and display basic area information about a Revit Building model is the color fill diagram, which can be either an area analysis plan or more sophisticated room plan with associated schedules. These plans are displayed in Views of their own. Schedules are also Views, as you have seen in Chapter 7; room and area plans, like schedules, can be located on sheets.
