Network Cabling Handbook

Chapter 19: Copper Terminations and Splices

OVERVIEW

Installing copper cables in a building is the first step to being able to use these cables for a communication system. Cable termination is the next step in the cable installation process. The new copper cables must be terminated so they can be utilized in a communication system for transmitting signals between system devices.

Cable termination involves the following activities:

?

Group the communication cables by termination position in the telecommunications room (TR).

?

Organize the communication cables into properly dressed cable bundles.

?

Label the communication cables.

?

Perform the actual termination of the cable conductors on the terminating hardware components.

Punch down blocks and patch panels are the components used to terminate the communication cable conductors in the TR. Modular outlets/connectors are the components used to terminate the communication cable conductors in the work area. Work area and equipment patch cords are used to make a connection to the communication devices.

Copper communication cables must be terminated with a connecting hardware component in order to be used by a communication system. Connecting hardware components provide the means to attach and detach the communication cable from communication devices. If the cable is not terminated properly, signaling problems will occur over the cable.

This chapter will describe the proper procedures for terminating copper communication cables. It will describe the procedures for terminating copper cables on punch down blocks, patch panels, and modular connectors/outlets. This chapter will also describe the steps for splicing copper communication cables...
