Planning Using Primavera Project Planner P3, Version 3.1: Including Updated Workshops

This chapter covers the following topics:
understanding the P3 file structure
creating new projects
opening project files
understanding the screen and
customizing the screen.
There are two methods of creating a new project in P3:
Using the File, New menu option to create a new project.
Using Tools, Project Utilities, Copy to copy an existing project, opening it with File, Open and modifying it.
The method of copying projects will be covered in the TRACKING PROGRESS chapter.
Before creating a project file you must understand a little about the P3 file structure.
P3 will work with one file type only, P3, which is the standard format for P3 files:
The project has a mandatory four characters for the project name
A number of files are created in the project directory for each project
All files will have a P3 file extension and
All files are prefixed with the four character Project name.
When a new project is created in P3 it automatically becomes a Project Group. Sub projects may then be created under a project group and these sub projects are termed Projects. Projects (sometimes referred to as Member Projects) share the calendars, codes, resources and other data from the Project Group. You may work entirely within a Project Group and do not have to create a Project under a Project Group.
