From Section 4.9, we learned the term power means using an averaging time that is "many periods of the highest frequency." The term average power means that the energy transfer rate is to be averaged over many periods of the lowest frequency involved. For a CW signal, the highest frequency and the lowest frequency are the same, so the average power and power are the same. However, for an amplitude modulated (AM) wave, the power must be averaged over many periods of the modulation component of the signal.
