SFPE Engineering Guide: Piloted Ignition of Solid Materials Under Radiant Exposure

Appendix Experimental Results for Different Materials

The data presented in the appendix is a collection from several sources. The data were chosen based on several criteria:

  1. Data must be for radiant piloted ignition. Although other forms of ignition are not uncommon and in many cases spontaneous ignition may occur, piloted ignition data are more common in the literature and conservative (i.e., occurs at a lower temperature) for engineering analysis.

  2. Exposing heat flux levels must be below 50 kW/m 2. Heat flux levels greater than 50 kW/m 2 are typically very short and are more applicable to flame spread analysis.

  3. The radiant source must have been an electric resistance heater to reduce any possible effects that can result from high-temperature sources such as a tungsten filament light.37

  4. All the data are for a horizontal geometry. Although data are available for vertical samples, the majority of the data are for horizontal geometry. For a discussion of the effects of sample orientation, consult reference 28.

Typically, the data presented in the appendix correlate better using the thermally thick correlation as described above. However, for certain fuels the thermally thin correlation provided a better fit. When conducting an analysis, consider whether the material used to generate the data was thermally thin or thermally thick.

The experimental data are presented in a summary table for each sample. The first five rows give the sample type, reference source, experimental method, ignition temperature, and sample size. The ignition temperature is ...
