Introduction Part I

The world of instrumentation and controls (I&C) is a dynamic one. Those who are working in it know that it can be a chaotic environment in which order doesn't just happen it must be imposed. At its most elemental level, the purpose of an I&C system is to provide a means of communicating process information (i.e., temperature, pressure, level, etc.) to an operator. The information must be accurate, repeatable, and useful. Then, the system must provide a means to let the operator modify the manufacturing process as necessary to achieve a desired effect. This simple statement belies the difficulty involved. Just as a manufacturing process takes raw material, processes it, and yields a finished product, so must the design process function. The raw material, in the case of instrumentation, is minutia multitude of minute bits of information. The design process must provide a means of collecting, managing, and packaging this information to yield a clear, concise design package that is useful to the construction team, operations, and maintenance. This book describes the typical elements of a design package the "engineering deliverables" and the design process that creates it.

The adage "There are many ways to skin a cat" certainly applies to the design process, and this book makes no claim to the contrary. The design techniques presented here are merely one designer's approach. But, the deliverables discussed comprise the basic elements of...
