TABLE OF CONTENTS While preliminary I&C activities such as the P&ID takeoff, input/output (I/O) list generation, and detailed estimate are ongoing, the mechanical and civil engineering groups work on several items that are key to the I&C design package. This chapter describes some of these items and links them into the I&C design.
Equipment arrangements are physical drawings that depict the floor arrangement of the process areas. They are derived from the structural steel drawings that show items such as column lines, elevations, and stairwells. The mechanical and civil departments team up to flesh out these drawings to include the process equipment, in-line "piped" instruments, major pipe artifacts, safety showers, and so on.
These drawings are, for the most part, reference drawings for the I&C design team. However, it is good to coordinate the location of field junction boxes (FJBs) by getting them placed on these drawings. Doing this sometimes avoids piping conflicts since the mechanical group will see the box as an obstacle to avoid.
The purpose of the equipment arrangement is to accurately depict major equipment items as they will appear on the process floor. More often than not, these drawings are rendered from a computerized three-dimensional model.
Predecessors to the equipment arrangement are the P&IDs, structural drawing set, and equipment specifications. The equipment arrangement is then used to generate piping orthographic drawings and instrument floor plans.
