Supportability Engineering Handbook: Implementation, Measurement, and Management

This is a stand-alone document that is initiated in windows D1 or O1 of a program. It is distributed to every individual involved with the program, so this section normally provides a description of the program and the basis for consistent understanding of program direction.
An overall description of the program and organizational strategies
Functional or physical depending on program status
Brief but specific
For orientation
Statement of the need
Strategic use
Based on operational requirements
This section should provide focus on the specific areas that are of concern for supportability and set the foundation for all future supportability engineering activities.
Detailed mission/use scenario
Measurement base
Frequency of use
Systems required
When and where systems will be placed into service
Duration of installation
Setup of support locations
Maintenance
Supply
Training
Deployability/mobility issues
Significant issues/concerns for providing support
Geographic/climatic issues
"Green" issues (hazardous/toxic)
This section should contain a detailed description of the system being replaced. The information contained in this section will be the basis for many supportability analyses conducted during acquisition of the new system.
