Water and Wastewater Calculations Manual

The quantity of wastewater produced varies in different communities and countries, depending on a number of factors such as water uses, climate, lifestyle, economics, etc. Metcalf and Eddy, Inc. (1991) lists typical municipal water uses and wastewater flow rates in the United States including domestic, commercial, institutional, and recreational facilities and various institutions.
A typical wastewater flow rate from a residential home in the US might average 70 gallons (265 L) per capita per day (gal/(c d) or gpcpd). Approximately 60 to 85 percent of the per capita consumption of water becomes wastewater. Commonly used quantities of wastewater flow rates that form miscellaneous types of facilities are listed in Table 6.1 (Illinois EPA 1997).
