Essential Rubber Formulary: Formulas for Practitioners

Scorching is the premature vulcanization of a product at an undesirable stage of processing such as mixing, molding, calendering, extrusion, and other forming operations.
The compound formula given below will scorch even at a temperature of 100 C and become unusable for further processing such as mixing, calendaring, extrusion, and molding.

This experimental formulation is given to alert the rubber technologist to avoid a wrong dosage of accelerator being used. However, scorching occurs when processing temperatures are high, due to the accelerating effects of certain fillers and other ingredients such as antioxidants, process aids, and high dosage of inorganic oxides.
Rubber goods are generally sold by the piece. In other words, they are sold based on volume and not weight. However, certain cheap products such as low cost sheets are sold by weight. Therefore, it is important that the rubber technologist knows the specific gravity of the product and also those of the ingredients used. The lower the specific gravity of an ingredient, the smaller the weight that is required to fill a definite volume. Practically all rubber ingredients are sold by weight, and therefore the rubber technologist...
