   Bore Gage       Bore gages are used to measure the inside diameter of a hole, bore, or blind hole at shallow to very deep (~0.03 inches to several feet) depths into the bore. 
   Internal Caliper       Calipers use a precise slide movement for inside, outside, depth or step measurements. While calipers do not typically provide the precision of micrometers, they provide a versatile and broad range of measurement capabilities: inside (ID), outside (OD), depth, step, thickness and length. Shop tool, spring-type or firm joint calipers consist of two legs with a scissor action and are usually used for comparative gaging or measurement transfer; although some spring-type calipers have dial indicators. 
   Gaging System / Station       Gaging systems or stations are larger, more complex units for large-scale gaging. They are usually available in bench top or floor mounted configurations. These devices may consist of several gages, fixtures, or other components for holding or manipulating parts during inspection.  Typically, systems or stations have specialized gaging or inspection systems customized for particular OEM application.  Air gaging stations, gear testing systems, form gaging systems, tire profiling systems, and universal gaging systems are example of these types of products. 
   Hole / Slot Gage       Expanding collet type gages are used for the comparative measurement of small holes. The gage is expanded in the hole and then removed and measured with a micrometer or other external (OD) gage. Alternately, the hole or slot gage can be set and used to check whether the hole is above or below a specific size or tolerance. 
   Indicating Bore / ID Gage       Indicators are gaging devices for comparative measurements where the linear movement of a spindle or plunger is amplified and displayed on a dial, column or digital display.  Typically, indicators have a lower discrimination (~0.001" to 0.0001") and greater range (~+/- 1.000" to +/- 0.050" total) compared to comparators.  The level or precision is sufficient for measurement of precision ground parts and for the calibration of other gages. 
   Inside Micrometer       Micrometers are instruments for precision dimensional gaging.  They consist of a ground spindle and anvil mounted in a C-shaped steel frame. Micrometers are available in scale, digital, and dial variations. 
   Pin / Plug Gage       Pin / plug gages are production functional gages for go / no-go assessment of hole and slot dimensions or locations compared to specified tolerances. 
   Rocking Gage       Rocking gages are bore gages that are rocked to centralize or align the gage in the bore for a true measurement. An operator monitors the dial indicator during rocking to read the bore diameter. 
   Telescoping Gage       Telescoping gages are expanding gage with two telescoping legs used for comparative measurement of larger holes. The gage is expanded in the hole and then removed and measured with a micrometer or other external (OD) gage. Alternately, the telescoping gage can be set and used to check if a hole is above or below a specific size or tolerance. 
   Thread Gage / Verifier       Dimensional instruments, tools, or gaging components are designed for measuring thread size, pitch, or other parameters. Thread plug gages, thread ring gages, measuring wire, thread comparator, thread gaging rolls, thread gaging spring, and STI plug gages are used for thread measurement. Calipers and micrometers with point anvils or contact tips are used for thread or serration measurement. 
   3-point Bore Gage       3-point bore gages have three contact points mounted on arms that expand out from a central point.  3-point bore gages can detect lobe or out-of-roundness conditions, which is an advantage over 2-point ID gages.  These gages usually have dial or digital displays. 
   Other       Other unlisted, specialized, or proprietary bore or ID gage types.

   Air / Pneumatic       Gages or gaging systems use the changes in flow or pressure in air nozzles or inlets internally located in air plugs, probes, rings or snaps or other pneumatic gages. Pneumatic comparators, digital readouts, analog amplifiers, columns or flowmeter / rotameter tubes are used to display air gaging dimensional data. 
   Electronic       Electronic gages use LVDT, capacitance, inductive or other electronic probes to sense the distance or displacement of a contact or stylus. Mechanical gages such as micrometers, plug gages, and snap gages may employ an integral electronic probe in addition to the mechanical gaging elements. 
   Mechanical       Mechanical gages use comparison or the physical movement and displacement of a gaging element (e.g., spindle, slide, stem) to determine the dimensions of a part or feature. Micrometers, calipers, indicators, plug gages, ring gages or snap gages are examples of mechanical gages. 
   Other       Other unlisted, specialized, or proprietary technology types.

   Dial / Analog / Direct Reading Scale       Devices include dial displays, column/bargraphs, and direct reading scales. Dial displays use a pointer or needle mounted in a graduated, disc dial. The dial provides an indication of dimension or position around or from a zero reference point with dial graduations or styles, such as 10-0-10, 45-0-45, 4-0-4 or 50-0-50. Column and bar graph displays provide a graphical presentation of dimensional data. Direct reading graduated scales have rulings or graduations engraved or printed onto a linear, disc, or drum surface that provides a direct indication of the gaged dimension. Vernier scales provide additional amplification or an increased level of precision (e.g., thousandths).  
   Digital Display       Digital display types present metrology data in numeric or alphanumeric form. Micrometers, calipers, and indicators are available with digital displays. Gages with digital displays often have data output capabilities using serial or other formats.  Digital readouts are a precision type of digital display integrated into dimensional gages or systems.
