| Chain Type | |||
| Your choices are... | |||
| Bar-link Chain | Bar-link chain is manufactured with two outer sidebars and one center bar, and two pins. Bar-link chain does not usually have bushings, and does not have rollers. The main application of this chain type is tension linkage applications and slow moving conveyors. Bar-link chain is also manufactured in a multilaced, leaf-type construction. Bar-link chain is also referred to as block and bar or steel block chain. | ||
| Cable Chain | Cable drive chain is manufactured of molded plastic links on stainless steel wire rope. Cable chain combines the features of link chain and synchronous belts, and can be used with standard spur gears. | ||
| Flat-top Chain | Flat-top chain is constructed of two-piece assembled links made of fabricated steel or molded plastic. Each link has a hinged top plate that is connected to adjacent top plates with pins. Flat-top chains have a pitch of 1 1/2 inches and the top plate width is generally between 2 1/4 inches and 12 inches. Standard flat-top chain consists of three basic types of flat-top chain: basic steel chain, normal-duty plastic chain, and heavy-duty plastic chain. Standard flat-top chain is covered by ANSI standard B29.17. The only application of standard flat-top chains is conveyors in industries such as bottling, canning, packaging and food processing. Many nonstandard flat-top chains are available for a variety of conveying applications. The most common type of nonstandard flat-top chain is side-flexing flat-top chain, which is used to convey objects around corners. Nonstandard flat-top chain is not covered by any ANSI standard. | ||
| Leaf Chain | Leaf chains are a rollerless chain commonly used on fork lift trucks and other material handling applications. Leaf chain is constructed of steel link plates mounted side-by-side on pins. The contour of the link is the same figure eight shape found on standard roller chain. The chain can flex at each pin. Leaf chain is used in tension linkage applications, where the chain is kept in tension and can be moved in either direction. Leaf chain is commonly used on forklift trucks, and in other material handling applications. Leaf chain is also referred to as cable chain and balance chain. | ||
| Roller Chain | Roller chain is used for both drive and conveyor applications. The three main types of roller chain are power transmission roller chain, conveyor roller chain, and tension linkage roller chain. | ||
| Sidebar Chain | As the name implies, straight sidebar chain with rollers is constructed of straight sidebars (chain links), steel bushings and pins, and rollers that turn freely on the bushings between the sidebars. The diameter of the rollers is generally much larger than the width of the sidebars. Conveyors are the main application for this chain type. Offset sidebar chain with rollers is constructed of two offset sidebars, steel bushings and pins, and rollers that turn freely on the bushings between the sidebars. Each link in this chain type is identical. The main application for this chain type is drives. | ||
| Silent Chain | Silent chain, also called inverted tooth chain, is constructed similarly to leaf chain with toothed link plates assembled side-by-side on pins. The toothed profile meshes with the tooth in a sprocket. As in leaf chains, silent chains can flex at each pinned joint. Nonstandard silent chain is a variant on standard silent chain, but is not covered by any standard. Nonstandard silent chain may be manufactured for specific applications. Examples of nonstandard silent chain are duplex chain, chain with rocker-type pins, and other specialty chains. Standard silent chain, also called inverted tooth chain, is constructed similarly to leaf chain; with toothed link plates assembled side-by-side on pins. The toothed profile meshes with the tooth in a sprocket. As in leaf chains, silent chains can flex at each pinned joint. Standard silent chain is manufactured to the ASME B29.2 standard. | ||
| Steel Pintle Chain | Steel pintle chain, or open-barrel steel pintle chain is a lightweight conveyor chain consisting of a one-piece offset steel link and pins. These chains do not have rollers. Open-barrel steel pintle chain is used in agricultural and conveyor applications that run in dirty environments. | ||
| Welded Steel Chain | Welded steel chain is similar to offset sidebar rollerless chain, except the sidebars are welded to the bushings (or barrels) instead of attached with tight tolerances and a press fit. ASME standard B29.16 lists nine types of welded steel mill chain and standard B29.18 lists nine types of welded steel drag chains. Welded steel mill chain is used for general conveying and is available with a variety of attachments. Welded steel drag chain is used for drag conveyors handling bulk materials. | ||
| Other / Specialty Chain | Other, unlisted, or proprietary chain type. | ||

| ANSI Pitch (ANSI Roller Chain only) | Number designations for roller chain pitch are governed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). English roller chain and sprockets are categorized according to ANSI B 29.1M. The number can be used to identify pitch in the following way: the first digits identify the pitch in 1/8" increments, and the last digit is 0 for standard proportions, 1 for lightweight chain, and 5 for rollerless bushed chain. A #41 sprocket is therefore for 1/2"-pitch lightweight chain, a #120 sprocket is for 1-1/2" pitch chain, etc. | ||

Chain Material
Back to Top
|
|
| ||
| Chain Material | Roller chain comes in a wide variety of metal and plastic materials. Many factors such as cost, environmental conditions, noise and heat generation and design horsepower transmission influence the best material choice. Consult a chain manufacturer on a specific application for material optimization. | ||
| Your choices are... | |||
| Acetal (Celcon®, Delrin®, etc.) | Acetal polymers are semi-crystalline. They offer excellent inherent lubricity, fatigue resistance, and chemical resistance. Acetal suffers from outgassing problems at elevated temperatures, and is brittle at low temperatures. Glass-filled and added lubrication grades are available, flame retardant grades are not. Brand names include Celcon (Hoechst Celanese), Delrin (Dupont), Thermocomp (LNP), Ultraform (BASF), and Acetron (DSM). | ||
| Fluoroelastomer / Perfluoroelastomer (Viton®, Kalrez®, etc.) | Fluoropolymer elastomers are normally black and have high heat, oil, and chemical resistance. They have indifferent low temperature performance. With the exception of Kalrez® (Dupont Dow Elastomers), perfluorinated elastomer, they are the most highly temperature-resistant of all commercially available elastomers. Trade names include Viton® (Dupont Dow Elastomers), Fluorel® and Aflas™ (Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.), and Technoflon® (Montedison). | ||
| Polymide (Nylon, Nylatron®, etc.) | Nylon, comprising several grades of polyamides, is a general purpose material in wide use. Nylon is tough, corrosion resistant, and has good strength ratings for plastic. This material includes high performance plastics, such as Nylatron®, nylon plastic filled with molybdenum disulfide lubricant powder. Nylatron® is a registered trademark of Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products, Inc. | ||
| Polypropylene | Polypropylene is a thermoplastic material exhibiting excellent cold flow, bi-axial strength, and yield elongation properties. It is similar to PVC but can be used in exposed applications because of its resistance to UV, weathering, and ozone. | ||
| Stainless Steel | Stainless steel refers to a broad family of steels that are chemical and corrosion resistant. Stainless steel is typically not hardened or hardenable to the same extent as standard carbon steels. | ||
| Steel / Hardened Steel | Steel is a commercial iron that contains carbon in any amount up to about 1.7 percent as an essential alloying constituent. It is malleable when under suitable conditions, and is distinguished from cast iron by its malleability and lower carbon content. | ||
| Other Metal Material | Unlisted or specialized metal chain material. | ||
| Other Plastic Material | Unlisted or specialized plastic chain material. | ||
