Rockwell Hardness Testers
Description
Rockwell Hardness Testers are devices used to measure the hardness of materials by determining the permanent depth of indentation produced by a force on an indenter. They are widely used due to their ease of operation and accuracy compared to other hardness testing methods.
Working Principle
The Rockwell hardness testing method involves using a cone-shaped diamond indenter to penetrate the material. The test measures the depth of the indentation left by the indenter under a specific load. This depth is then used to calculate the Rockwell hardness number. The method is favored for its ability to provide direct hardness values and its adaptability to various materials, making it a versatile tool in material testing.
Applications
Rockwell Hardness Testers are commonly used in testing metals, including heat-treated steel and non-ferrous metals. They are functional for structural steel, heat-treated steel (HRC), case-hardened materials (HRC), and non-ferrous metals (HRB). However, they are restricted in use for large samples and thin samples unless proper scales are used.
Advantages over other Hardness Testers
Rockwell Hardness Testers offer several advantages over other methods like Brinell and Vickers. They provide more defined indentations, making them easier to measure. The Rockwell method is generally easier to perform and more accurate, with automatic test procedures available in many models. Additionally, they offer direct hardness values and scale conversions, which are not always available in other testing methods.
Limitations
Rockwell Hardness Testers have limitations when used on materials where the test metal structure or surface conditions introduce too much variation. They are also restricted in use for large samples and thin samples unless proper scales are used. Additionally, they may not be suitable for curved or round surfaces.
Considerations
When considering Rockwell Hardness Testers, factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, durability, accuracy, and maintenance costs should be evaluated. Newer models offer automatic test procedures, which can reduce operating expenses and improve accuracy. However, the initial cost may be higher compared to older models that require manual operation. Durability and maintenance costs can vary depending on the model and usage, with closed-loop systems offering improved repeatability and stability over older dead weight testers.
