Optical Networking Best Practices Handbook

Section 4.8 - Summary and Conclusions

This chapter covers fiber-optic strands and the process, fiber-optic cable modes (single, multiple), types of optical fiber (glass, plastic, and fluid), and types of cable families (OM1, OM2, OM3, and VCSEL). It also includes ways of extending performance with regard to regeneration (repeaters, multiplexing, and fiber amplifiers), utilizing strategies to address dispersion (graded index), pulse-rate signals, wavelength division multiplexing, and OM3; and under care, productivity, and choices, how to handle optical fibers. Finally, this chapter also includes utilization of different types of connectors, increasing speed and bandwidth, advantages over copper, and choices based on need—cost and bandwidth [1].
