3.2.3   Electronic versus Optical Control

The lack of sophisticated processing capabilities in the optical domain dictates that
the switch control unit must be implemented using electronics. However, architectures
with all-optical control based on self-routing have also been proposed.

For example, a self-routing address scheme for optical networks that requires
only single-bit processing and is applicable to small- to medium-size all-optical
packet switched networks with arbitrary topologies is presented in ref. 9. According
to this scheme, upon entering a switch, a packet is attached with a self-routing
address that contains all the routing information from all input ports to the
desired output ports of the switch. Each output port of all the nodes in a network
is associated with a bit in the address header, and hence the address of a node
encodes a unique path from any other node to the node itself.

The data vortex packet switch is a well-known novel architecture that also
employs a form of self-routing. It is a multistage switch with no internal buffers
that facilitates all-optical implementation. Packets are processed synchronously
and in a highly parallel manner. The routing procedure is based on a single
header bit and is accomplished by wavelength filtering at the header retrieval
process. Because the header bits run at the rather low packet rate, there is no requirement
for high-speed electronics within the node. Additional control bits are utilized
to ensure the avoidance of contentions. The architecture of the data vortex packet
switch is presented in detail in Section 3.8.
