3.3.5  All-Optical Packet Switch Fabrics

The choice of optical switch fabric was outlined as an important design alternative
of an optical packet switch in the previous section. In this section, we discuss the
important properties of optical switch fabrics employed in packet switching nodes
and the technological challenges that remain to be faced.

The switch fabric at an OPS node must be capable of rapid reconfiguration on a
packet-by-packet basis. At data rates of 40 Gbps and beyond, this requirement
implies that switching times have to be on the order of a few nanoseconds. Other
critical requirements include scalability of the technology to high port counts, low
loss and crosstalk, and uniform operation across all signals independent of the
path from input to output port; moreover, issues such as reliability, energy usage,
and temperature-independent operation are also important [15].

Today, very few optical technologies are capable of switching speeds in the
required range. Semiconductor optical amplifiers and electro-optic lithium niobate
(LiNbO3) switches are two candidates. The SOAs have switching speeds in the
order of a few nanoseconds and may be integrated on a relatively large scale.
They have the advantage of compensating for power loss because of their inherent
amplification. One of their limitations is the noise they add to the signal. Electrooptic
LiNbO3 switches offer subnanosecond switching times. Only medium-scale
integration is possible with LiNbO3 due to relatively high insertion loss, which
imposes limitations on the scalability of the technology. Both the SOA and electrooptic
LiNbO3 technologies have planar waveguide structures, which make them
polarization-sensitive. Careful design is necessary to reduce polarization dependency.
Fabrication cost is also an important issue for optical packet switching
fabrics [14].
