Achieving Inventory Accuracy: A Guide to Sustainable Class A Excellence in 120 Days

Having parts stored in proper containers and having them properly labeled helps the cycle counters do their job effectively and efficiently. Many times, odd-shaped parts can be stored in specially built pallets that make it very easy to see how many there are in the location.
When parts are small and require protective packaging, special considerations should be made to have packaging that is easy to count and pick for production use. This might mean packaging in egg-carton-type layers that force consistent amounts per layer or packaging items in dozens or, even better for counting, tens. Be aware of the dangers when packaging multiple parts in one package. The packaging must be as foolproof as possible so that people do not pick a box of ten and think they are picking one item.
Lastly, have the location identifiers well labeled and easy to see and read. Make sure these labels are consistently applied throughout the entire facility. Label locations so that they can be read from any direction.
Having parts properly packaged and labeled makes cycle counting much easier, more efficient, and more accurate.
